Privacy NoticePrince Harry has reportedly said his “final goodbye” to royal life in the UK after enduring the “last straw” with his family, according to a royal expert. It was revealed that the Duke of Sussex had switched his main residence from the UK to the US in March 2023 – the same day Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex handed back the keys to their former home, Frogmore Cottage. Over a year ago, in March 2023, following the release of the Duke of Sussex’s memoir Spare, it was disclosed that King Charles had asked his son and his wife Meghan Markle to leave their home. This left Harry “furious”, a royal expert revealed to the Mirror.

It’s also been suggested that his return for the tenth anniversary of the Invictus Games was the Duke’s final “goodbye” to royal life and his former homeland. Royal expert and author Tom Quinn told the paper: “The Invictus Games were founded by Harry when he was still a working royal so pressure isn’t being brought to bear to make him give it up now.” Tom added: “But even if Harry begged to be allowed back to help out – even if his father King Charles became so ill he was unable to carry out his duties – whatever happens, the call to help will never go out to Montecito. Making the US his primary residence is Harry’s final goodbye.”

This follows Tom revealing that the alleged “last straw” for Harry came when he and Meghan were ousted from Frogmore Cottage. “At the time, few people realised what a slap in the face the eviction from Frogmore felt like for Harry it was the last straw.” The five-bedroom cottage is tucked away on the Frogmore Estate and was originally built in 1801 for King George III’s wife, Queen Charlotte, to use as a quiet retreat. The couple were gifted the home by the late Queen after their wedding in 2018, but there was allegedly some friction over the choice as the pair had another Windsor property in their sights. According to The Times, Harry and Meghan wanted to live within the Castle itself and reported asked if “living quarters could be made available after their marriage”. At the time, only the Queen and Prince Philip had private apartments within the actual castle, with everyone else living elsewhere on the estate.

When the King issued Harry and Meghan with an eviction notice from the home, it was reported that he was drawing up a “range of options” to satisfy his brother Prince Andrew after insisting he must leave his current home at Royal Lodge. One option presented to Andrew was thought to be Frogmore Cottage. A source said King Charles told Harry and Meghan he wanted them out to “allow someone else to move in”. But Tom claimed that Harry will not be happy with the development. “However deep the rift with his father and brother, Harry always had hopes that he and Meghan might eventually be allowed to re-establish Frogmore Cottage at Windsor as their UK base,” Tom told The Mirror. “He will be deeply upset at the prospect of his uncle Prince Andrew moving into Frogmore – a very real prospect as King Charles insists that Andrew cannot continue to live at Royal Lodge, the 30-room mansion on the Windsor estate where Andrew has lived for decades.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
