Privacy NoticeEstranged brothers Prince Harry and Prince William may experience an ‘awkward’ meeting at the funeral of their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, according to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond. The journalist and television presenter spoke exclusively to OK! following the death of Lord Fellowes, who served as private secretary to Queen Elizabeth II for nine years, and was married to Princess Diana’s sister Lady Jane Spencer for 46 years. Royal watchers expect that Harry will want to attend his uncle’s funeral, as he was close to the Fellowes family, with Jane asked to give a reading at Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018. However, Jennie believes his attendance may cause problems. “I imagine Harry will want to be at his uncle’s funeral…. but his presence would cause all sorts of awkwardness if William attends too,” she said. “It would be nice to think, though, that two grown-up men could at least be in the same space…. as they were at the coronation, albeit briefly…. without ruining an occasion of great sadness and solemnity.” Sign up to OK’s royal newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free

It is possible that the funeral of their beloved uncle could spark a softening of relations between William and Harry, but Jennie isn’t so sure. “I think we have learned by now that nothing seems likely to thaw the frost between William and Harry. We thought the Duke of Edinburgh‘s funeral would be a turning point, it seemed highly likely that the Queen’s funeral would unite the family, and then we had the coronation,” she said.

“None of these once in a lifetime events did anything to mend the rift between the brothers. Both boys have remained close to their maternal aunts, and they all came together to unveil the statue to Diana three years ago. The brothers were already at war, but appeared civil…perhaps for the sake of their aunts,” she added. Lord Robert Fellowes died on Monday 29 July at the age of 82. He was one of Queen Elizabeth II’s most important advisers during the years that she faced the divorces of three of her children (Charles, Anne and Andrew) as well as Diana, Princess of Wales’s death in 1997. Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, paid tribute to Robert following the announcement of his passing. “My absolutely exceptional brother-in-law, Robert, is no longer with us. A total gentleman – in all the best meanings of that word – he was a man of humour, wisdom and utter integrity. I’m deeply proud to have been his brother-in-law.” Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
