Privacy NoticeNo matter how early your flight is, resist the urge to wake yourself up with a coffee. Boarding a flight can be nerve-wracking even under the best circumstances. Even if you’re buzzing with excitement about your upcoming holiday, the stress of reaching the airport on time, navigating through security, and locating your seat on the plane can be quite overwhelming. Doing all this in the early hours of the morning can leave you feeling more drained than you already are, so it’s hardly surprising that many of us treat ourselves to a pre-flight coffee at one of the numerous airport cafes or onboard the plane to stay alert. However, if you’re thinking of celebrating National Coffee Day today (October 1) with a delicious latte, a flight attendant has some crucial advice for you. She posted a viral video on TikTok, advising people against drinking coffee before a flight, particularly if you’re an anxious flyer.
The woman, known as Miva, revealed her top tips to help alleviate your fear of flying before you board a plane, and her number one suggestion was to avoid coffee both prior to and during your flight. She highlighted that caffeine could “intensify tension” and disrupt your sleep, increasing the likelihood of anxiety throughout the journey. Caffeine acts as a stimulant, prompting your nervous system to produce adrenaline, which can amplify any existing feelings of anxiousness. Alongside coffee, it’s wise to avoid energy drinks, which are typically high in caffeine too. Although tea contains caffeine, it has about half the amount compared to coffee, meaning its impact might be less significant. Mivas top tip was to “invest” in your comfort when flying by upgrading your seat within your financial means. She noted: “You don’t have to book a first-class ticket [but] book more legroom and wear something comfortable. That makes you feel more cosy. Also, take a neck pillow or a sleep mask with you.” Most crucially, if you’re feeling nervous before your flight, reach out to the cabin crew. Miva advised: “Let us know that you are afraid. We’ll check on you during the flight. Ask questions that trigger uncertainty in you, and we will answer them for you.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
