Privacy NoticeAs someone who lives smack bang in the middle of the country, opening my curtains to see the sunrise over the sea is a rare occurrence, but one that’s always more than welcome. During my stay at Pier House, that was exactly my view on a sunny autumn morning when I watched the early morning dog walkers and open water swimmers descend on Charlestown’s harbour in Cornwall. Located south of St Austell, you’d be forgiven for mistaking Charlestown as being a scene straight out of a movie. In fact, over the years the Grade II-listed harbour has doubled up as a film set, perhaps most notably for BBC’s Poldark, though you may have spotted it in Tim Burton’s 2010 version of Alice in Wonderland or Dr Who too.

Once a bustling working port used to export copper and China clay, Charlestown is just the place if you’re wanting to revisit the footsteps of sailors from times gone by. Filled with colourful fishermen’s cottages, bars and eateries as well as plenty of independent shops, there’s plenty to explore – and you may even spot a celeb or two. And nestled right in the centre of the action, you’ll find Pier House. Newly reopened, the sage green building is perched right on the historic harbour and boasts enviable views across the sea come rain or shine, making it the perfect place to stay. After parking down the road at the Rashleigh Arms, we checked into our superior sea view room and were mesmerised by its Pinterest-ready calming green interior and deluxe super-king bed. With four room types on offer, the finishing touches make it feel like a home from home, but way better – we’re talking Roberts radios, Elemis toiletries and dry robes (for those brave enough to take a dip in the sea).

With our room overlooking the harbour, we could’ve spent hours watching the waves come in from the comfort of our very own cosy viewing area, binoculars in hand. During our stay we were even lucky enough to have front row seats to catch a film crew in action, so we popped down to Pier House’s sea-facing bar and sun-trap terrace for another look. As a pub conversion by the family-owned St Austell Brewery, it was only right we sipped on a pint of Tribute to mark the occasion.

The food at Pier House While Tribute may be one of the staples at the bar, the food is just as noteworthy. For dinner, its Newlyn-landed haddock, crushed minted peas and chunky chips gave us that ultimate ‘I’m on holiday’ feel and kicked off the trip in style as we looked out to sea. For a refreshing pick me up on day two, the pea and shallot ravioli did just the trick. And the breakfasts are just as good – think loaded pancakes, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and meaty, veggie and vegan full Englishes.

What to do in Charlestown But don’t let Charlestown’s quaint nature fool you – there are plenty of things to do and explore. From grabbing a pizza at Harbour Beer House or picking up some ice cream from Tallships Creamery to browsing locally made ceramics at The Craft Kiln at The Old Workshop, you’ll leave with a full stomach and bag packed with souvenirs. When in Charlestown, a tour of St Austell Brewery, located a short 10-minute drive away, is a must whether you’re a beer drinker or not, just to hear the passion of the tour guides and discover just exactly how beer is made. You can even embrace your inner Peggy Mitchell and pour yourself a pint during the post-tour sampling session! If that wasn’t enough, no trip to the area would be complete without a trip to The Eden Project to take in its Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes. Now that’s a staycation to remember! How much does it cost to stay at Pier House? Rooms at Pier House start from £175 per night on a bed and breakfast basis, based on two sharing a classic double room.Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
