Privacy NoticeSocial media has gone into overdrive over suggestions Zendaya could be tipped for an Oscar following her role in Challengers. The film, which grossed $94.2 million globally, centres on a heated love triangle involving tennis stars Tashi Duncan (played by Zendaya), Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), and Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor). When Tashi turns to coaching her husband Art following an injury that halts her career, they face off against Patrick in a battle for the grand slam title. The movie, directed by Luca Guadagnino, was met with rave reviews from audiences, propelling Zendaya into the Oscar conversation at just 27 years old. Variety has named her as a likely candidate for the 2025 Academy Awards, while a tweet from Film Updates indicated that Zendaya is being considered for Lead Actress, with her co-stars in the Supporting Actor slots. This tweet, now viral with over 1.8 million views, has left fans divided.

A Twitter user expressed their dismay, stating: “This year’s first egregious category fraud. O’Connor and Faist are 1,000% the film’s leads and Zendaya is supporting. Patrick and Art’s relationship is what’s driving the story.” The phrase ‘category fraud’ is used to describe the contentious placement of an Oscar nominee in a category that may not seem fitting, often sparking debate between leading and supporting roles. Alicia Vikander’s 2016 win for Best Supporting Actress in The Danish Girl is a prime example of this controversy. Fans argued that she deserved recognition as the lead because she accounted for about 50% of the film’s runtime. Since Faist, O’Connor and Zendaya have almost identical screen times in Challengers, fans are not convinced about Zendaya’s validity as the lead. One fan commented: “Yeah no, anybody that’s seen this movie knows Zendaya is absolutely not the lead in it lol.” Another exclaimed: “Ok this is ridiculous. Zendaya is actually supporting here. Both guys are leads! WTH!”. However, some fans are celebrating the predictions. One fan rejoiced: ‘If Zendaya wins this award I will never shut up about it. STEAKS ON ME. ” Another mused: “Zendaya potentially being the first Black woman to win the best actress Oscar since Halle Berry would be special.” Halle Berry is the only Black woman to have won an Oscar for Best Actress; she bagged the gold for her 2002 role in Monster’s Ball, directed by Marc Forster. The Academy Awards official nominations are set to be released in January 2025.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
