But, in a surprising turn of events, Zara gave birth at home “on the bathroom floor” as they couldn’t get to the hospital in time due to the swift nature of her labour. Mike shared the exciting news at the time on his rugby podcast The Good, The Bad and The Rugby, where he exclaimed: “Arrived very quickly. Didn’t make it to hospital. On the bathroom floor.” He described the whirlwind experience: “So yeah, it was running to the gym, get a mat, get into the bathroom, get the mat on the floor, towels down, brace, brace, brace.” Sign up to OK!’s TV newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free He continued with the details: “Fortunately the midwife who was going to meet us at the hospital wasn’t that far away so she drove up just as we had assumed the posit [position] and the second midwife arrived just after the head had arrived,” reports the Express.

The couple, who already have two daughters, Lena, two, and Mia, six, experienced their first homebirth with Lucas. While Zara’s unexpected home delivery might seem unconventional, it actually revived a royal tradition once observed by the late Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen herself had her last child, Prince Edward, at Buckingham Palace, making him the last Royal Family member to be born at home until now. A tweet from the royal enthusiast account Gert’s Royals highlighted this historical moment: “Of Queen Elizabeth’s descendants, Lucas Tindall is the first baby to be born at home since Prince Edward was born at Buckingham Palace 57 years ago.”

Joe Little, the managing editor of Majesty magazine, shared some interesting insights after Baby Lucas’s home birth. He said: “Every royal baby born since the 1970s has been born in hospital.” He added, “The upper classes would never have babies in hospital. It became a modern royal convention.” Unlike her royal cousins Prince William and Prince Harry, Zara doesn’t hold an HRH style or title as she isn’t a working Royal. She resides in a cottage on her mother Princess Anne’s Gatcombe Park Estate. Baby Lucas is 22nd in line to the throne and became the Queen and Prince Philip’s 10th great-grandchild. In a heartfelt tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, Zara and Mike chose Philip as their son’s middle name.
