Privacy NoticeDaisy Ridley has revealed how her stressful ‘Star Wars experience’ over the three films impacted her health. In a resurfaced interview, the 32 year old actress was open about her sudden rise to fame and hectic filming scheduled which caused her such severe anxiety that it led to “holes in her gut wall”. Ridley is currently starring in Disney+ film, Young Woman and the Sea, released on Friday, July 19, which tells the extraordinary true story of the first woman to successfully swim the English channel. But Daisy, who appeared in the Star Wars films released in 2015, 2017 and 2019, has also been open in the past about living with endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome and skin problems she’s experienced as a result. The Young Woman And The Sea star has spoken candidly about the toll that stress and exhaustion took on her after The Force Awakens hit theaters and according to reports, it was by the time The Last Jedi opened, Ridley’s anxiety was so severe that she’d developed holes in her stomach wall.

Eventually, Daisy had to slow down, spending six months at home practising self care before The Rise of Skywalker started filming. The actress, who shot to fame with her starring role in the Star Wars franchise, was thrilled with the opportunity, but also felt significant anxiety and stress after becoming the face of a major film, and the high level of attention that came with it. In am interview with The Times, the actor shared how high levels of anxiety led to stomach ulcers. “Essentially, it was a leaky gut,” she began, noting that she was “just knackered” while promoting the film. “I’d never travelled that much, or done press junkets, and my body deals with stress in a very physical way, so my gut was manifesting an emotional reaction to travelling around the world, people saying hello to me in the street. And me going, ‘What’s going on?’ And worrying.” The star also revealed that she worried about whether or not she was the right pick for the role and claimed it took a long time for her to feel fully confident.

But Ridley first spoke about developing holes in her gut during a 2020 interview withGQ where she admitted that her anxiety and exhaustion became debilitating. “I saw a picture of me at the London premiere for The Last Jediand I was so skinny and my skin was terrible,” she said at the time. “My body was just f—ed up. I got tests done and it turned out my body was taking in no nutrients. I was just like a little skeleton and I was just so tired. I was becoming a ghost.” At the time, Ridley told Glamour UK that therapy was actually a great solution for her to get her mental health on track.

She said: “I went to therapy for a bit, which was great. Cause a lot of it was about feeling out of control, cause I’m quite controlling in that I like to know what’s going on, and suddenly you’re in a situation where you have no idea what’s going on.” To also help her cope with her feelings of stress and imposter syndrome, Daisy took comfort in focusing on the work she was putting out into the work, rather than the feedback. It comes after it was revealed in January that Daisy would reprise the role of Rey for a new Star Wars movie, written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and directed by filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. She’s currently starring in Young Woman And The Sea in Disney+ as the accomplished swimmer Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel.
