Privacy NoticeEagle-eyed Wicked fans have been sent into a frenzy after spotting a familiar face in a behind-the-scenes featurette for Universal Pictures’ forthcoming musical. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are leading the cast as Galinda Upland and Elphaba Thropp names that fans will recognise as the iconic duo, Glinda the Good and The Wicked Witch of the West from the beloved Oz tales. Directed by Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians fame, the first instalment will light up cinema screens this November. However, a featurette shared to YouTube which shows behind-the-scenes moments on the film’s set has given fans a glimpse at a potential major cameo that was previously undisclosed, reports Wales Online.

Eagle-eyed devotees noticed Broadway sensation Kristin Chenoweth, who earned her stripes (and a Tony Award nomination) playing Glinda on stage, in the midst of the clip in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment as an Oz native. Flocking to social media to share their theories about the mystery woman, one fan wrote: “I think she’s playing Galinda’s mom!,” while another shared “OOOOH! They gave her a cameo!”. Others have been left pondering whether Idina Menzel, the original on-stage Elphaba, might also make an appearance in the film. However, not all reactions were positive, as some pointed out the potential consequences of a cameo leak. “Can’t believe they let this out”, wrote one fan. Another said simply: “Somebody getting fired.”

The news follows Chenoweth’s reflections on her transformative experience in the Wicked stage show during a 2022 interview with the New York Theatre Guide. When quizzed about stage blunders, she revealed: “There are so many, but one that only I seem to find funny is there were lights that moved, very expensive lights. We were lucky to have them. And one time, the lights – instead of getting stuck on us – got stuck on about 20 people in the audience. They looked very uncomfortable.” She continued: “It went on for 30 minutes, and I got the giggles, and Carol Shelley [Madame Morrible] got the giggles so hard. She was looking at me like, concentrate. I couldn’t stop laughing until she got the giggles. The 20 people were uncomfortable in this lighting. They just wanted to come see a show. They didn’t want to be there, but they were.” Wicked: Part One comes to cinemas on November 22.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
