Privacy NoticeVienna Blood is returning to BBC Two and iPlayer with series four and will see Matthew Beard and Juergen Maurer reprise their roles as crime-fighting duo Doctor Max Liebermann and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt. Based on the bestselling Liebermann novels by Frank Tallis, the drama is filmed on location in Vienna but season four will be a little different as it will follow one case spanning two episodes that will “push Max and Oskar to limits never seen before”. In the new season, Matthew’s character Max returns from a successful lecture tour in New York where he has been spreading Freudianism very successfully. He’s got a promotion and now the Director of the Neurology department.

Speaking about what he’s learnt as an an actor while working on Vienna Blood, Matthew said: “I’ve matured with the character I think and learned a lot. Making television is difficult. Apart from all these joys, locations and wonderful people we also move very quickly, and I’ve learned how to adapt and relax actually which I think most actors will say is the best thing for their work and hardest to do.” He added: “How to have fun with the work really is what I’ve learnt.” But what other roles has Matthew had and where will viewers recognise him from?
Vienna Blood will return to BBC with series four
Who is Matthew Beard? Matthew is a 35-year-old actor and model from London. While Juergen is known for his roles in Vorstadtweiber, and Tatort, viewers will recognise Matthew from his appearances in films and series such as The Imitation Game, Dracula, and Magpie Murders. Matthew is probably best known for his role as mathematician Peter Hilton in the 2014 film The Imitation Game alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. The movie is based on the real life story of legendary cryptanalyst Alan Turing and was nominated for eight awards at the Oscars. Matthew also starred as Fraser in the popular BBC drama Magpie Murders, and Alan Lewis in the sci-fi series Avenue 5. He also featured as Jack in the mini series Dracula.

Previously, Matthew has had roles on series including Kiss Me First, Decline and Fall and Rouge. In 2009 he starred as the shy Graham in the Academy Award nominated film An Education, which came nine years afer he made his on-screen debut in Big Meg, Little Meg. More recently Matthew has starred as Bill Gardiner in Sky Max’s Funny Woman, which is based on the best-selling novel by Nick Hornby. However, Matthew has been on television for longer than anybody might know, as his first role actually came when he was just two-years old in the series Soldier, Soldier. According to IMBD, Matthew had the minor role of Mathew Wilton in the 1991 show. It’s also been reported that Matthew starred in Lego adverts when he was just eight years old, as well as commercial campaigns for Sunny D and Warburtons. He’s also had success on stage, he starred David Hare in the play Skylight in the West End and on Broadway alongside Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan, earning himself a Tony Award nomination for best featured actor in a play. He also starred as Edmund Tyrone in the 2018 revival of Long Day’s Journey into Night. Aside from acting, Matthew has also dabbled in modelling, featuring in campaigns for both Burberry and Prada. He’s also tried his hand behind the camera, serving as funding producer in the the 2017 film Fitzroy.
