Privacy NoticeKing Charles and his younger sibling Prince Andrew have been at odds for months over the occupancy of the 30-room Royal Lodge on the Windsor Park estate. It’s rumoured that King Charles is eager to move the Duke of York onto new pastures, and he may even have a replacement in mind. In 2021, it was revealed that Andrew, aged 64, was finding it difficult to cover the £400,000-a-year maintenance costs of the £30 million property. The King has reportedly been keen to stop his private funding for security on the estate and relocate Andrew to more humble living quarters, such as nearby Frogmore Cottage.

However, Andrew signed a 75-year lease on the property back in 2003, which means his brother has no legal right to evict him. This deadlock has led royal insiders to suggest that the only solution is for a family member to “make Andrew see sense”. Speaking on the Palace Confidential podcast, The Mail on Sunday’s Royal Correspondent Natasha Livingstone said: “Prince Andrew has been living in the Royal Lodge for about 20 years. The problem is that because he’s not a working royal any more, the public aren’t funding him. But Andrew has his name on the lease for the Lodge, and tied up with that is that he has responsibilities to maintain it.”

Natasha went on to explain that just the regular painting of the Lodge’s exterior is an expensive task, and there’s some disagreement over who should foot the bill. Royal Lodge has seen its fair share of drama, but Mail on Sunday’s Charlotte Griffiths suggests Sarah, Duchess of York, might just hold the keys to peace. With Prince Andrew and Sarah sharing the same home, the idea might seem a bit left-field. Charlotte adds: “It’s in their interest for him to keep this very grand house because first of all Fergie lives there and second of all there are some reports that the girls might actually inherit it one day, or inherit their lease over it so they might sort of want it want to keep it in the York family.”

Hinting at a growing alliance that could be influential, she continues: “She’s actually got this relationship with Charles now that’s getting better and better and stronger and stronger, so she could be a bit of a mediator.” But even with Sarah’s bridging efforts, Charlotte acknowledges the tough road ahead, mentioning: “these are two of the stubbornest men in England and they’re used to getting their own way.”
