The new season has been full of twists and turns, along with several famous guest stars. The likes of Jinx Monsoon and Callie Cooke have joined the Doctor and Ruby in the new series, and now American actor Jonathan Groff is due to make his Doctor Who debut. Jonathan, 39, will appear as a new character named Rogue in an upcoming Regency-set episode.

The episode – due to air on Saturday, 8 June – sees the Doctor and Ruby land in 1813. They come across Rogue, who is a bounty hunter and will have a ‘major impact’ on the Doctor’s life. The synopsis for the episode provided by the BBC reads: “The Doctor and Ruby land in 1813, where guests at a duchess’s party are being murdered and a mysterious bounty hunter called Rogue is about to change the Doctor’s life forever.” Any further details about the upcoming episode have been kept firmly under wraps, and it remains to be seen how Rogue will get on with the Doctor and Ruby. Promo shots show Ncuti, Millie and Jonathan all dressed in regency era-style clothing on a grand staircase.

Many fans will recognise Jonathan, who has starred in numerous hit TV series and films. The actor is arguably best known for portraying Jesse St. James in Glee, as well as Holden Ford in Netflix’s Mindhunter. He also appeared in And Just Like That… as well as HBO’s Looking and American soap opera One Life to Live. Jonathan’s film credits include Knock at the Cabin, American Sniper and The Conspirator. He also voiced the fictional character Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen films. The 29 year old also boasts a hugely successful Broadway career. He rose to prominence in the production of Spring Awakening, with his performance earning him a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. Jonathan played King George III in Hamilton in 2015, which bagged him another Tony nomination, and he’s also starred in Little Shop of Horrors. He currently appears in the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez.
