Privacy NoticeGood Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway is set to surprise fans by pursuing a completely different career path, with the presenter making her drama debut in ITV’s Douglas is Cancelled. Written by Sherlock’s Steven Moffat, the ITV comedy-drama stars Hugh Bonneville as Douglas – a respected newsreader who’s career hangs in the balance after he’s overheard making a sexist joke at a wedding. He stars opposite Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan, who plays Douglas’ younger co-presenter Madeline. The four-part series also sees the likes of Ben Miles, Alex Kingston, Nick Mohammed and Simon Russell Beale take on roles as Douglas’ social media scandal plays out on screen. However, broadcaster Kate Garraway also joins that star-studded list – with the Good Morning Britain host making a cameo as herself in the series.

In episode one, fans are set to see Douglas and Madeline stop by ITV’s Good Morning Britain to chat about their news programme Live at Six, with Kate Garraway interviewing them on the morning show’s sofa. It won’t be the first time that Kate has played herself in a series – with the presenter appearing as herself in Keith Lemon comedy Lemon La Vida Loca, Channel 4’s Hollyoaks and TV film Sharknado 5: Global Swarming. Speaking about the drama ahead of its June release, star Hugh said that his character lulls the audience into a “false sense of comedic security”. He added: “You are drawn down a certain path and then your expectations are overturned. “Douglas is a likeable character but he has smugness from the comfort zone he feels he’s in relatively near the top of the media tree,” he said. “Little does he know that in his slipstream, his protégé Madeline is far smarter and far more on the case than he is.”
Alex Kingston plays Douglas’ wife Sheila in the series – and has admitted that she based her character on a real-life person
Meanwhile, Alex Kingston – who plays Douglas’ newspaper editor wife Sheila in the drama – revealed that she based her character on Sue Vertue, the drama’s producer and wife of writer Steven Moffat. “I wanted to base my character on someone who is incredibly strong, independent, a little intimidating but who is fiercely protective of her husband and family. “I will probably be cancelled for saying this name but it started out as Sue! She was the basis because she’s loving and protective. We’re in the same age bracket. The trajectory that Sheila is on is not about her running the newspaper so much as her putting out the fires that Douglas is constantly starting.” Douglas is Cancelled arrives on ITVX on Thursday 27th June.Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
