Privacy NoticeLenny Rush has fiercely defended his casting in Doctor Who against cruel trolling that it was because of his dwarfism. The actor, 15, has won a BAFTA for sitcom Am I Being Unreasonable? and has had roles in Dodger, Best Interests and A Christmas Carol, but when he was announced for the guest cast of Doctor Who he faced online insults accusing the BBC series of being “woke”. Lenny will play Morris Gibbons in the two-part series finale, The Legend of Ruby Sunday, which finally explores what happened when Ruby Sunday was born and abandoned outside a church, beginning on Saturday, 15 June. As well as joining Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson, Lenny will appear alongside Bonnie Langford who returns as former companion Mel.

Lenny has spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, which means he has dwarfism, and he hit back at trolling about his casting in an interview with That Gaby Roslin Podcast. He said he was “really lucky” not to have had to audition and spoke about the exciting moment his mum Lisa had handed him the phone to take a call offering him a Doctor Who role “She showed me it and I [whispered] ‘Doctor Who?!’ She [whispered] ‘Yeah’ and it was crazy. I think if you’re offered a job, you sort of think it would be something not too massive. But to be offered Doctor Who was amazing!” he said. But Lisa added: “[We saw] the Doctor Who announcement and on the side comments, you see the word ‘woke’ and that Lenny’s just been brought in to ‘tick a box’. But I like to think, and our Lenny knows, It’s because actually he’s good at what he does. And Doctor Who doesn’t just do that.”

Lenny agreed, saying: “The horrible thing about nowadays is, if you are being inclusive, then you’re woke. If you’re showing representation and you’re diversifying everything, which is how it should be, it’s woke.” The BAFTA-winning actor added that showrunner Russell T. Davies was “a legend” and “a really clever man”, saying that there was a lot of secrecy around his character Morris whose last name he wasn’t even allowed to reveal in advance. However, he was able to share that Morris rides a Segway which has “secrets inside” and Lisa added that it had been “jazzed up a bit”. Lenny said that he felt “very privileged, very lucky” to have landed a role in the sci-fi hit which is drawing to the end of Ncuti’s first series as the Doctor. Doctor Who airs on BBC One on Saturday, 15 June at 6.30pm
