Privacy NoticeCoronation Street’s Helen Worth has been spotted for the first time since quitting the soap after an incredible five decades – and she looked rather downcast. The Corrie legend, who has played Gail Platt for 50 years, was spotted out in London shopping at Sainsbury’s, sporting casual jeans and a padded coat. Helen, 73, announced her departure from the soap on Wednesday 5 June, issuing a statement via ITV that said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. “I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”

Fans were completely shocked by Helen’s announcement with one fan writing on social media: “What do you MEAN Helen Worth, the legend, the icon, that is Gail Platt, is leaving Corrie omg we’re never gonna witness these iconic moments again”. Another added: “Oh no. Helen’s one of my favourite actresses in Corrie. She’s like in the fabric of the show like Bill & Barbara & Sue. But I suppose she might want to try something new for a change.” A third said: “She will definitely be missed. One of Corrie’s all time greats”.

Helen, who joined the soap in 1974 as 16-year-old Gail Platt, has been at the centre of an array of explosive storylines during her 50 years on set, from her daughter Sarah’s teenage pregnancy, and the death of her fourth debt-ridden husband Joe McIntyre. She has has also been married a total of six times – including twice to the same groom! One of Gail’s most iconic moments which still has fans talking about it today came in a 2003 episode when she discovered her husband Richard Hillman was a serial killer. He then attempted to murder the entire Platt family by driving their car into a lake. Helen confirmed this week she will start filming her big exit story next month and the emotional scenes will be on screen at the end of the year. While she’s a Corrie icon, Helen has also appeared in an episode of classic police series Z-Cars and then had uncredited roles as a teenager in classic movies Oliver! And The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She also starred in an episode of Doctor Who in 1971 and the drama Within These Walls. It was in 1974 when Helen won the role of Gail Platt in Coronation Street in 1974 when she was 23, although her character was meant to be 16 at the time.Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
