Helen, who is 73 and currently celebrating 50 years as Gail, said in her announcement: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.” She went on to explain: “I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. Helen added: “The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.” The actress, who was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2022 for services to drama, began her acting career in 1963 when she was just 12 and going by the name Helen Wiggleworth. She first appeared in an episode of classic police series Z-Cars and then had uncredited roles as a teenager in classic movies Oliver! And The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She also appeared in an episode of Doctor Who in 1971 and the drama Within These Walls before she won the role of Gail Platt in Coronation Street in 1974 when she was 23, although her character was meant to be 16 at the time. Helen has appeared as Gail in more than 3000 episodes, and holds the distinction of playing the soap’s most married female character, as the ever optimistic Gail has been hitched five times.

Gail’s first husband in the soap was Brian Tilsley, who was murdered, and she then went on to marry younger partner Martin Platt, followed by Richard Hillman, who turned out to be a serial killer. Gail’s luck with men didn’t improve, as she next married Joe McIntyre and found herself in prison for his murder, then she married Michael Rodwell, who she first came into contact with when he burgled her house. ITV have teased that Gail’s departure from Weatherfield will be part of “a major storyline for the Platt family.” Helen will start filming her exit story in July and her sure to be emotional exit scenes will be broadcast before the end of the year. Following the announcement of Helen’s departure from the cobbles, Corrie executive producer Iain McLeod said: “Gail has given us countless hours of entertainment but it should also be said that Helen herself is a consummate professional and a thoroughly good egg. Everyone connected to the show will miss having her around the place just as much as the viewers will miss having her on their screens and we wish her all the very best for the future.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
