Privacy NoticeAs this year’s Britain’s Got Talent series nears the grand final, ITV bosses are looking at giving the show a huge cash boost – rumoured to be worth around £100 million – and changing the format of the series so it runs for longer next year. In recent years, the show has run for around six to seven weeks from mid-April to the beginning of June, but the new plan is for BGT to start in February and be on air for three months. This would fill the gap left by the end of Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, and the cash injection would be used to make the show bigger and possibly even better than BBC series Strictly Come Dancing.

BGT is currently produced by Thames, and the current five year contract between Thames and ITV ends next year. ITV is expected to extend the contract of the successful show for another three or five years, especially as the series has been receiving an impressive 24 billion views of clips from the series online, a figure that is very appealing to online advertisers. An insider told The Sun: “BGT has been on since 2007 and viewing numbers are higher than ever — it’s just fans are watching it differently. Having over seven million viewers makes it the most watched entertainment show after I’m A Celebrity. Stretching BGT over three months could make it even more of a presence.” BGT’s YouTube channel has more than 20 million subscribers, compared to Strictly’s 772,000. The most viewed clips include Susan Boyle’s audition in 2009, illusionist Darcey Oake in 2014 and Callum Scott in 2015.

This year, some of the memorable moments watched thousands of times by fans on YouTube include the moment that judge Bruno Tonioli broke the golden buzzer in support of dance troupe Phoenix Boys (more than 550,000 views), Taryn Charles singing (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman (1.9 million views) and Sydnie Christmas’s cover of Tomorrow from the musical Annie, which has been watched more than six million times. Hosted by Ant and Dec, and featuring judges Amanda Holden, Bruno Tonioli, Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon, the current series of Britain’s Got Talent is coming to an end with four live semi finals from Monday 27 May until Thursday 30 May, followed by the grand final itself which takes place on Sunday 2 June on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm. The winner will receive a prize of £250,000 and a slot in the next Royal Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall in November.
