Privacy NoticeThe BBC has revealed plans for two special programmes in tribute to the late TV presenter Dr Michael Mosley, who tragically passed away while on holiday in Greece recently. Michael Mosley – The Doctor Who Changed Britain is set to explore his nearly four-decade-long broadcasting career, following the discovery of the 67 year old’s body after he went missing on the island of Symi last Wednesday. The late columnist was found in a rocky area near Agia Marina beach on Sunday. Originally training as a doctor, Michael later transitioned into broadcasting. He presented a variety of science programmes and films for the BBC, including the series Trust Me, I’m A Doctor, which delved into healthcare in Britain. The upcoming BBC One special, scheduled to air on Friday at 8pm, will examine how he transformed people’s lives and served as an executive producer on shows such as Pompeii The Last Day, Krakatoa Revealed, Life Before Birth, and Supervolcano, the Mirror reports.

The corporation stated: “His programmes have made a lasting impact on the nation’s health habits from intermittent fasting to the benefits of a cold shower. Michael also shared his own struggles with audiences worldwide; as a chronic insomniac he made programmes about sleep and, ever curious, he would also go to extremes in the pursuit of science, even infecting himself with a tapeworm. “Celebrating Michael’s career, this programme marks the enormous impact he made, touching the lives of so many.” There’s Only One Michael Mosley, a new programme, will be hitting the airwaves on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds from 11am this Friday. It’s set to feature an exclusive inclusion – the final interview conducted by Mosley that he apparently recorded just last month. TV doctor Chris van Tulleken, who collaborated with Michael for the series Trust Me, I’m A Doctor, is lined up to introduce this recording. Michael also recently taped a special edition of his regular health tip show, Just One Thing, with professor Paul Bloom at the Hay Festival on May 25. His wife, Dr Clare Bailey Mosley, was also part of this event – she’s not just a well-respected doctor, but also a successful author and health columnist.

Remembered fondly for bringing the 5:2 diet into popular consciousness through his book The Fast Diet, which he co-wrote with journalist Mimi Spencer, Michael advocated for a modified approach known as The Fast 800 diet. This variant diet revolves around a “moderately low-carb, Mediterranean-style diet”. Amongst many other achievements, Michael earned an Emmy nomination back in 2002 for his executive producer role in the scientific documentary, The Human Face. His adventures did not stop there, with him even consuming tapeworms for six weeks in a boundary-pushing documentary called Infested! Living With Parasites on BBC Four in 2014. Michael was reported missing on the Greek island of Symi last week, with his body found a few days later. BBC News reported on Monday that Greek police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou revealed to them that an initial post-mortem showed no injuries that could have led to his death. It’s also been suggested that Michael passed away around 4pm local time on Wednesday. He reportedly left his friends on a beach on the island at about 1.30pm to take a stroll. The police have indicated that the position of his body and the ‘lack of injuries’ point towards a natural cause of death. Toxicology and histology reports are expected to follow in due course. There’s Only One Michael Mosley will air on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds on Friday at 11am.
