Timothée Chalamet had a simple one-word reaction when it was revealed that Adrien Brody had scooped the Best Actor award at the 2025 Oscars. Chalamet was nominated for the award for his work in A Complete Unknown, playing singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. However he missed out on the award to The Brutalist star Brody. As the winner was announced at the glitzy Los Angeles ceremony, Chalament could be seen looking towards an emotional Brody and applauding. He then gave a one-word response to the result. According to lip reader Jeremy Freeman, Chalamet simply responded: “Yeah.” It is not clear whether he is responding to a comment from someone nearby though. It looks very glamorous and at certain moments, it is. No matter where you are in your career, no matter what you’ve accomplished, it can all go away.” Body language expert Judi James suggested that Chalamet didn’t show a “flinch of disappointment” despite missing out on the award. Just over a week ago, the star confessed his ambition to be “the best” when he won the SAG Award, reports the Mirror.

Commenting on Chalamet’s reaction to the Best Actor announcement, James remarked: “Timothee opted for the grown-up pose for the split-screen here, lifting his head to be fully visible to the cameras despite the risk of losing out on yet another award for his role in A Complete Unknown. He had won best actor at the SAGs though so his face-baring might have signalled a new sense of optimism. “He managed to avoid any flinch of disappointment when Brody’s name was called but during his speech at the SAGS he revealed openly his levels of burning ambition to be ‘The best’ so this had to hurt. “He glanced in Brody’s direction with a mirthless subdued cheer to show he can also be a good loser, clapping his hands in a cupped position that did register good-hearted support for the Brutalist star.”

At the recent SAG Awards, Chalamet shared how much effort he put into A Complete Unknown, labelling Dylan as a “true American hero”. He continued: “I can’t downplay the significance of this award because it means the most to me, and I know we’re in a subjective business, but the truth is, I’m really in pursuit of greatness. “I know people don’t usually talk like that, but I want to be one of the greats. I’m inspired by the greats. I’m inspired by the greats here tonight. I’m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps. And I want to be up there.” Meanwhile, at the Academy Awards, the film Anora, which centres around the life of a sex worker, swept the board, bagging six golden statues including Best Picture, Best Film Ending, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
