They say New York is the city that never sleeps, but there’s another hotspot with a bustling nightlife and thriving cultural scene much closer to home – Liverpool. Located right in the middle of the hustle and bustle is The Halyard, the first of IHG’s Vignette Collection hotels (a curation of unique and hand-picked hotels) in the UK. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to be a stone’s throw from the main draws of the city centre while also enjoying a peaceful and relaxing stay. The spirit of Liverpool is really embodied here, and all its food is sourced from the North West. As you walk in you’re greeted with its Instagrammable reception filled with foliage, which leads into the Voyagers Restaurant and Bar. Our room was spacious with a separate lounge area and huge bathroom. We also had a balcony that overlooked the city – a view not to be missed, especially at night. Luckily, the doors are so soundproof you can still get a restful sleep in the huge, comfy bed.

Where to eat in Liverpool We ate dinner at Voyagers Restaurant, which consisted of delicious small plates including chorizo in red wine, crispy fried chicken and triple-cooked chips with smoked sea salt. It was absolutely amazing, and although they’re called “small plates” we couldn’t finish it all. Breakfast the next day was just as good, with a mix of hot meals, fruit and pastries, and great coffee.

What to do in Liverpool If you can prise yourself away from the luxury of your room at The Halyard, the list of things to do in Liverpool seems endless, whatever the weather. We headed to the Albert Dock where we walked along the different restaurants on the waterfront, before heading into the Museum of Liverpool to learn about the history of the city. We then popped up to Gino D’Acampo’s 360 Sky Bar for cocktails and mocktails and enjoyed the amazing views of the River Mersey. The city famously has two cathedrals and before heading back to the hotel, we visited Liverpool Cathedral. A sight not to be missed, it’s the largest in Britain and the fifth largest in the world.
