Privacy NoticeDanny Jones has opened up about his struggle with anxiety, alongside his career highs. The 38 year old soared to stardom as one part of the boy band McFly back in 2004. And in June 2019, he joined the coaching panel of The Voice UK and The Voice Kids. But it’s not all been smooth sailing; delving into his solo work meant facing old demons, particularly his fight with anxiety. Chatting on the Official Charts: Take The Hit podcast, Danny opened up about the ordeal: “The solo stuff took a while. It’s been like therapy because growing up with whatever experiences you grow up with, it’s hard to write about it. It’s hard to go back and revisit it and understand why you’ve got anxiety; understand why you are who you are.”

However, Danny has revealed that he has found strength in his mental health journey and has expressed that he’s found more “positives than negatives”. Opening up about his personal life, Danny admitted: “Yes I’ve had anxiety, yes I’ve been down about it, yes I don’t talk to my dad anymore,” reports the Express. Danny spoke about his younger years grappling with anxiety, revealing that it “hit” him at 18 – which coincided with the time that his parents’ marriage broke up. And his anxiety returned again when he was 20 years old.

I experienced claustrophobia, coming out in cold sweats, feeling a band tightening around my chest and worrying I was having a heart attack. It’s so scary and I’ve felt like I was dying on occasions. You can’t believe your body can do that to you.” He also admitted to being plagued with “dark thoughts” that affected his “whole life” and that admitting he was suffering from anxiety was the first step into conquering it.

Danny shared that even therapy offered an eye-opening perspective: “I went to a little bit of therapy and the guy showed me a book he’d written about it and it seemed like it was just a pointless thing that your brain does to you, it’s almost like a reaction to survival, your body wanting to panic and pass out and having those fears.” The star also revealed that whilst suffering from anxiety, he found that podcasts helped him. Danny listened to entrepreneurial podcasts like Real Health and from MMA fighters to people who run global businesses. Danny explains that he felt reassured knowing his feelings were common: “They all have ups and downs and they all felt the same as I did and I felt very comforted knowing that.” While some might turn to medication for anxiety, Danny disclosed a personal choice to face it differently: “Medication works for some people but I didn’t want to go down that route. I wanted to hit it head on and really face the fear of it and the struggle of it as soon as I could, but everything takes time.” If you’ve been affected by any of the issues in this story you can contact Samaritans in the UK and Ireland on freephone 116 123, or email jo@samaritans.org or jo@samaritans.ie.Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
