Privacy NoticeThe Chase’s Mark Labbett is known on-screen as The Beast – and not for the reason you may have assumed. While the 59-year-old is a “beast” when it comes to quizzing, this isn’t actually why he has the scary moniker. And contrary to popular belief, it’s not to do with his towering stature either. On X, formerly known as Twitter, people have shared their surprise after finally figuring out the meaning behind the nickname. Especially as they’re only jut learning it after 13 series of the show, which first aired in 2009. If you speak French, you may have known it already. This is because the surname “Labbett” is pretty similar to the French word for beast. On social media, one viewer exclaimed: “Wait, am I the last person to find out that The Beast on The Chase was called that because La bête is French for beast and his last name is Labbett!? I genuinely thought it was another ‘big lad’ type of name!?” Another user replied to the revelation, saying: “No. I’m the last”, while another said they were ‘today years old’ when discovering the fact. Want to learn more about Mark? Don’t go anywhere as we have plenty more exciting stories that you can dive into below. Previously, ‘The Beast’ exclusively told OK! about an EastEnders star who nearly became a Chaser after impressing bosses. He also opened up about a “worry” he has about host Bradley Walsh. And while we’re on the topic, The Chase has undertaken a huge shake-up recently. It comes as the popular ITV programme has celebrated a milestone anniversary.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
