Fans can expect the show to make a dramatic return to their screens later this month with fresh twists and turns. During an appearance on BBC’s The One Show with his co-star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Oliver gave viewers a sneak peek into what to expect from the new season. Chatting with hosts Clara Amfo and Lauren Laverne on Wednesday’s (19 February) episode, the pair dished out some juicy details about the forthcoming episodes. Oliver teased that his character James takes a dark turn in the second series, as he seeks vengeance against wife Sophie.

He explained: “This show as a whole, you never really know who to trust. So, that’s kind of the fun of the show. You go down one avenue with someone, and then it gets turned on its head. So, all the characters live in this grey area.” He added a chilling detail about his character’s motivations: “James is back for revenge after his wife’s left. He basically runs a truck through her life, like every loving husband does.” Gugu, who not only stars as Sophie but also serves as an executive producer for the show’s second season, hinted that the plot “really opens up” and teased the introduction of new characters, reports the Mirror. The first season of Surface, which debuted in July 2022, follows the story of Sophie, a woman grappling with amnesia following a suicide attempt, as she unravels the mysteries behind her actions.

The new series synopsis teases: “The second chapter of Surface follows Sophie to London to unravel the secrets of her past. Having suffered an injury that robbed her of her memories, Sophie follows the few clues she has, using her vast stolen resources to embed herself in elite British society and discovering a possible connection to a beautiful heiress. “But everything changes when a journalist contacts her out of the blue, and Sophie realizes they were working together to expose a shocking scandal about the dangerous people she’s now become close to.” Mark your calendars for a thrilling journey with the eight-part second season of Surface, which is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on 21 February, delivering gripping new episodes every Friday through to 11 April. The One Show airs on weekdays on BBC One at 7pm. Surface series two will begin streaming on Apple TV on Friday, 21 February.
