The show saw aspiring hopefuls mentored over six weeks by casting director Kelly Valentine Hendry, who has worked on Bridgerton, Fleabag and Broadchurch. She and Bill were joined the casts of some of the UK’s biggest dramas including Silent Witness and Casualty. Each week the hopefuls were given guest mentors from shows to give them tips and advice, including Charles Venn, who plays Jacob in Casualty, and EastEnders’ Natalie Cassidy, known to millions as Sonia. For one part of the show, the contestants a performed a 2019 EastEnders scene in which Sonia saves the life of Ben Mitchell in the Queen Vic with rudimentary implements after he was shot.

They filmed in the real Queen Vic in the show’s North London studios and Natalie directed the scene. The hopefuls also worked with industry experts, from the Peaky Blinders fight co-ordinator to the intimacy co-ordinator from Sex Education. The BBC stated last year that the aim of the show was, “opening up the world of screen drama to eight people who have always dreamt of becoming professional actors but have never had the opportunity.” All eight actors secured their place through an open casting call process and were selected from almost 2000 amateur actors. None had been to drama school or found a way to break into acting professionally, having held back by a variety of factors. Bill Bailey added as the show launched: “Acting is a tough business, and it can often seem almost impossible to break into. All the actors on the show have faced their own challenges which have for various reasons prevented them from pursuing their dream.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
