Privacy NoticeStrictly Come Dancing’s new series is already stirring up drama, with the show’s new ‘welfare team’ having to intervene after a moment between Welsh opera star Wynne Evans and his dance partner Katya Jones that was caught on camera. The Go Compare advert singer was caught on camera placing his hand around Katya’s waist, which she quickly removed, leading to an awkward high-five attempt that Katya ignored. The duo later cleared the air, claiming it was all in jest, with Katya dismissing Wynne’s gesture as a ‘private joke’. This year, following a controversy involving ex-contestant Amanda Abbington and Giovanni Pernice – who exited amid disputes over training practices -Strictly introduced a welfare team to manage behind-the-scenes tensions. Despite the incident, no further measures are expected, according to PA news agency.

On Saturday 12 October’s BBC One episode, viewers witnessed 35-year-old Katya pushing away Wynne’s hand from her body. They both addressed the incident on Wynne’s Instagram, apologising and explaining it was “just messing around in the Clauditorium on Saturday night and just want to say sorry” adding: “It was a silly joke.” Saying they “really are amazing friends” and noting that the “high 5’s is a running joke”, Katya and her Strictly partner shared an apology following the awkward moment from Saturday’s show. A Strictly insider said to the PA news agency: “Wynne and Katya have confirmed that their interactions in the Clauditorium were silly jokes they had planned together and have apologised to anyone who may have misinterpreted them,” reports the Express. “They addressed them on Wynne’s Instagram, where their apology can be found.” Katya stated emphatically that she was not offended by Wynne, reassuring that it never made her uncomfortable. Ensuring everyone’s welfare, checks have been done, and no further action is deemed necessary over the incident. Scoring a respectable 34 for their passionate tango to Abba’s hit Money Money Money during the latest episode, the couple showed their dance mettle. September marked the grand return of Strictly for its 20th milestone year, featuring a fresh celebrity lineup and some changes, such as chaperones at all rehearsals. This new measure comes after Sherlock star Amanda Abbington voiced concerns about her experience with pro-dancer Giovanni Pernice earlier this year. The BBC recently extended an apology to Amanda, confirming, “We have assessed the complaints and we have upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made.” “We want to apologise to Amanda Abbington and to thank her for coming forward and taking part. We know this would not have been an easy thing to do.”
