Privacy NoticeA contestant on the US version of Strictly Come Dancing made show history this week when she debuted on the dance floor. The 33rd series of Dancing With The Stars, which is filmed in LA, features Anna Sorokin as one of the contenders – but viewers of Netflix may know her better as Anna Delevey, the real-life ‘fake heiress’ who was portrayed by Julia Garmer in the Netflix drama Inventing Anna. And with Anna convicted in 2019 on multiple counts of larceny and theft, she has a very special accessory to wear on the Dancing show – her court-ordered ankle tag.

The convicted con artist certainly made the best of her tag – which monitors her location at all times and allows her to avoid jail – by having it decorated with glitter as she made her debut on the show. 33-year-old Sorokin danced a Cha Cha Cha with dance partner pro dancer Ezra Sousa. She said of the device on her ankle, reports The Associated Press: “It is actually not a big issue at all. It’s pretty light and I asked them to make it tight, so it doesn’t dangle. So, it’s not so bad.” Her dance partner then said of the bedazzled ankle monitor. “It’s the real star of the show, let’s be honest here.” Anna danced the Cha Cha Cha to Sabrina Carpenter’s hit Espresso with her partner. The dance saw judges gave her straight sixes for the performance, for a total of 18 points,

Anna acknowledged her debut wasn’t as good as it could have been. “I feel relieved that it’s over,” she said. “I feel like my dance could have been a little bit better, but I’m happy I’ve done this, and it was a great experience all over.” Anna – whose real name Anna Sorokin – spent years posing as a wealthy heiress while defrauding a series of banks, hotels, and individuals out of $275,000. She was arrested in 2017 and found guilty of grand larceny, larceny in the second degree, and theft of services. Her story inspired the wildly popular Netflix series Inventing Anna, which starred Anna Chlumsky, Julia Garner, and Arian Moayed. Her choice as a Dancing on The Stars contestant has been a controversial one given her criminal record, but the signing has brought the show’s new series plenty of publicity When it was announced that Anna would be appearing on the show, many people took to social media to share their outrage. However, Anna hopes she can change public opinion. “Hopefully people will give me a chance to show what I can do. I served my time, and I repaid my restitution,” she said.
