Privacy Notice Dr Punam Krishan and Gorka Márquez left fans with a couple of similar gripes after their jubilant and emotional performance, which marked a first in Strictly Come Dancing history. Saturday night (5 October) saw the BBC One dance competition’s annual Movie Week special. The show kicked off with a group number from Strictly’s professional dancers who morphed into minions from the Despicable Me series, while Kai Widdrington made an appearance as the film’s baddie, Gru, complete with a bald cap and a fake nose. Next up, it was time for the remaining duos to hit the ballroom floor following last weekend’s surprising first dance-off and elimination of the series.

Among them were Morning Live’s Dr Punam Krishan and Spanish dancer Gorka Marquez who performed the first couple’s choice of the show’s 20th anniversary series to Bole Chudiyan from the Bollywood film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. They tied in second place with a score of 33, leading Shirley Ballas to exclaim “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” in line with her Mary Poppins costume. Before their performance, Dr Punam shared that she wanted to do a Bollywood dance to “bring my culture and my heritage to the forefront”. During rehearsals, she expressed: “I never saw Indian girls dancing on mainstream television so to be doing now an Indian dance on a platform like Strictly is huge.” She recounted the emotional loss of her grandad in India during the Covid pandemic, noting: “He’ll be watching and he’ll be really proud, as will my mum.” She reflected: “We didn’t grow up with much, we didn’t have a lot, but we got there.” Tearing up with emotion following host Claudia Winkleman’s question about what performing a Bollywood routine meant to her, Dr Punam responded: “It meant everything.” She added: “I feel like I just went to four-year-old me that would have loved to see something like this when I was growing up, and I guess you just can’t be what you can’t see.”

Strictly fans were left wanting more after their showstopping Bollywood dance

Viewers believed the routine was too short for their taste as they craved more, and felt the scoring was less than deserved. One took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote: “Far too short, I could’ve watched them dance for hours. Bollywood week should definitely be made a new category. Just imagine the dances, the music, the outfits! It would be amazing.” Meanwhile a second said: “Two complaints…… undermarked and not long enough. Absolutely loved this!! I don’t think I even watched Gorka.” In a flurry of online accolades, raved: “Incredible, I think they have been undermarked every week. Dance of the night.” Another chimed in: “One complaint, it was too short. It was amazing and I didn’t want it to end.” Adding to the wave of admiration, another noted: “Punam and Gorka What a treat watching a new genre of dance, Punam danced her out, and she enjoyed her best dance, and I loved, more please #StrictlyComeDancing #Strictly.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
