Privacy NoticeThe Olympics are now in full swing, and several of our favourite royals, including Princess Anne and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, have jetted off to Paris to cheer on Team GB as they compete against some of the world’s top athletes in hopes of bringing home a gold medal. However, it was Sophie’s outfit choice – and her surprising break from Royal protocol – that caught the attention of eagle-eyed fans during her appearance at the Games earlier this week. For her Parisian outing, the Duchess was seen celebrating Team GB’s gold medal win in the women’s team sprint, where the team set a new world record. She looked fabulous in a stunning purple floral printed dress that quickly won over royal fashion enthusiasts everywhere. Sophie chose the £1,198 Roisin dress by fashion label Erdem for the momentous occasion in Paris. The floral printed midi-dress perfectly balanced comfort with Sophie’s signature chic style, and she paired it with a pair of white High Mary Jane Leather Espadrilles by Penelope Chilvers – a brand loved by Kate Middleton.

To complete her look and combat the warm summer temperatures, Sophie wore her hair in an elegantly pinned back bun and opted for toned-down, natural makeup. While the overall look was a hit with royal fans, it did break a key rule among members of the royal family. Royals traditionally avoid wearing wedge heels due to the late Queen Elizabeth II’s dislike for the footwear style, reports the Mirror.

Vanity Fair once reported on the ‘rule’: “The Queen isn’t a fan of wedged shoes. She really doesn’t like them, and it’s well known among the women in the family.” Even the royals have fashion dos and donts, and when it comes to wedges, it’s a no-go zone out of respect for the Queen’s wishes. Yet Kate Middleton has stylishly tip-toed around this by slipping into wedges for more casual affairs. Back when the Princess of Wales was a fresh addition to the royal family, shortly after marrying Prince William, she was known for her wedge shoes, particularly during those breezy spring and summer days. Whether it was rocking a pair with her chic ensembles or casual denim, the Princess knew the art of working those wedge heels.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
