Privacy NoticeOnly Fools and Horses legend Sir David Jason was left baffled when The Repair Shop’s Jay Blades made an unusual request. In his latest memoir, Sir David shares a quirky anecdote about how his beloved character Derek Trotter made a comeback on TV in December 2021, thanks to Jay Blades’ peculiar enquiry. As Strictly Come Dancing was gearing up for its festive Christmas Day special in 2021, Sir David got a surprise call from the producers. They wanted to know if Blades could dance to the iconic Only Fools and Horses theme tune because he’s a superfan of the classic 80s sitcom. Sir David was taken aback by the odd ask, revealing: “My first reaction was: he’s possibly not quite right in the head. My second reaction was: I should definitely agree to send him a message of encouragement, via video, that the show can use on the night.”

Embracing the Strictly vibe, Blades even slipped into Del Boy’s signature getup for his performance with Luba Mushtuk. Sir David confessed that Blades’ routine was a risky move, commenting: “I mean, dancing to ‘Hooky Street’? Dressed as Del Boy? This was going to be either the world’s biggest ever victory over the odds, or the greatest disaster in the history of televised pro-celebrity ballroom dancing since Ann Widdecombe did the samba.” Meanwhile, Strictly enthusiasts have been left puzzled as to why the 84 year old has never showcased his ballroom dancing prowess on the show. However, he confessed that he’s never been invited to participate, reports Birmingham Live.

Sir David revealed that he was approached for the 2012 Strictly Christmas special but declined the BBC chiefs’ proposal. Blades and Sir David rekindled their friendship earlier this year on David and Jay’s Touring Toolshed, a 15-part restoration series on BBC Two. Blades is due to appear at Worcester Crown Court today (Friday, October 11) facing a single charge of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour towards his wife Lisa Zbozen.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
