The walking pad treadmill has exceeded my expectations (Image: Phoebe Barton)If you told me six months ago I would end up buying a treadmill so I can go on walks in my own home, I would have laughed. Now, I can’t imagine not having the convenient gadget that has quickly become one of my favourite purchases of the year. Last month I came across Amazon’s Sperax Walking Pad Treadmill on sale for £199.99, down from £299.99, and that’s when I began to imagine what it would be like to have a walking pad in my own home. I’m a member of a gym which I go to several times a week to attend classes, and I love going on walks outdoors, however sometimes I feel too exhausted to drag myself out the house. Plus, with winter fast approaching and off-putting dark and rainy evenings on the horizon, I suddenly realised how handy it would be to have a basic treadmill at home. I’m a fully remote home worker, which means I rarely leave my desk. When I worked in an office, I’d often walk over to my colleagues for a chat, go to the kitchen to make a cuppa, and pretty much every lunch break I’d leave the office for a walk around the block. Since working from home, the only time I leave my desk is for a quick toilet break or to grab my lunch which only requires walking downstairs. It has a handy LED display that accurately tracks your workout, including the time, speed, distance, and calories, and has a removable handlebar for peace of mind. Plus, it comes with a remote control and a flap that holds your phone or tablet, so you can watch videos or your favourite TV show while working out.

I admit my main motivation for buying the treadmill was to hopefully lose a bit of weight by making sure I go for a brisk walk everyday and get some vital steps in, as there’s no excuse when the walking pad is literally next to my desk. It’s given me so much more than I expected, though – it gets me away from my desk for a much-needed screen break at lunchtime, and I’ve had less pain in my back, neck and shoulders that was caused by being slumped at my desk all day. When the weather is colder, hopping on the walking pad is also a great way to warm my body up, which saves me putting the heating on. As well as using it during the week, the treadmill is super handy for weekend workouts, too. If I have plans, I’m unlikely to have time to pop to the gym, whereas now I will use the walking pad in the morning before getting ready and going out. The treadmill sits neatly next to my desk so I can hop on it whenever I fancy, and it’s quieter than I expected, so it doesn’t disturb the rest of my household. I usually do a brisk 20-minute walk every weekday during my lunch break, and will do an extra 20 minutes before or after work, or sometimes both. During a 20-minute fast walk, I burn around 85 calories and do 2,100 steps.

I’m so pleased I bought the treadmill as it has definitely benefited my physical and mental health, and it seems I’m not the only one, as it’s an Amazon’s Choice product and over 3,400 customers have awarded it five stars. I love being able to pop on some music and go for a walk or jog with no one watching me in the comfort of my own home. My only criticism is that there’s a slight crease on the belt of the treadmill that must have happened in transit, and after a month of use, it still hasn’t straightened out. This hasn’t affected the walking pad at all, and it isn’t a safety hazard, it’s more of an aesthetic issue. The treadmill has handy wheels for manoeuvrability, however, I would say it is very heavy, so if you need to move it into different rooms or up flights of stairs, you will definitely need at least two people to carry it. The Sperax Walking Pad Treadmill is still on sale at Amazon, so if you fancy giving it a try, buy it here for £199.99. Alternatively, Argos is selling a Dynamax RunningPad Folding Treadmill on sale for £399, while Debenhams has a 2 in 1 Folding Treadmill at a discounted price of £249.95.Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
