Privacy NoticeDavid Morrissey’s ex-wife once blamed her famous family for the collapse of their marriage. The 59 year old Sherwood actor, who is set to reprise his role as Detective Ian St Clair in the latest series of Sherwood, made headlines in 2020 when he announced the end of his marriage to wife Esther Freud. The pair said “I do” in 2006 in a ceremony on Southwold Pier, and welcomed three children – Albie, Anna and Gene. However, they shocked fans when they announced they were going their separate ways, with Esther, 61, attributing their famous relatives to the downfall of their love story.

Esther is the daughter of renowned British painter Lucian Freud, and the great-granddaughter of pioneering psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, known for his theories on human behaviour. She acknowledged her father, who passed away in 2011, had a profound impact on her life, and she inherited his zeal for work. “My father was a very powerful person, and I learned so much about relationships from him,” she confessed to MailOnline. “What was most important to him was work. So in my relationships with men, I never felt I had the right to be more important than work.” Esther, who was married to The Walking Dead star for 14 years, confessed: “That affected me and really ran my marriage. I could never say: ‘I need you’.” She revealed that their relationship took a back seat as David flew around the globe for his Hollywood career, with Esther supporting his success, reports the Mirror. “If he had to go away for six months somewhere, who was I to say: ‘Maybe another Robert De Niro film will come along…’ The idea of him being disappointed or missing out, I couldn’t have borne it. So he worked and I did the bulk of the childcare,” she admitted. After a bohemian childhood, which she detailed in her novel Hideous Kinky – later adapted into a Kate Winslet film – Esther sought therapy. She heartbreakingly admitted she was “prepared to pay any price” for family life, even if it meant long periods apart from her husband.

“That kept me going for years but then it occurred to me I was very lonely and I thought it would be incredible to also have a companion and someone I could trust. I guess your priorities shift,” she shared. Having spent years travelling with her sister and their mother, writer Bernardine Coverley, Esther vowed she “wouldn’t fall in with absent men”, but realised she had done just that when she encouraged David’s career. “It took me a long time to realise: I’ve just fallen into it but at a slightly different angle,” she confessed. David is now romantically linked with Domino Pateman, who works as a director at a gender-equality charity. The pair have been seen stepping out together in London last year.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
