Privacy NoticeReese Witherspoon has teased that the next instalment of HBO hit drama Big Little Lies is well under production, as the author will be turning in the next novel ‘very soon.’ Based on Liane Moriarty’s best-selling book of the same name, the dark comedy follows a group of upper-class women in California whose lives are entangled by a dark secret. The series debuted to much acclaim in 2017, sweeping up eight Primetime Emmy Awards. Season two saw similar success, with Meryl Streep joining the already star-studded cast which includes Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz. Five years after the finale aired, the lead actress has hinted that the highly-anticipated new series is getting closer.

Speaking to E! News, at the Hello Sunshine Shineaway event, she revealed: “I really want to have a season three. Nicole and I have been waiting for Liane Moriarty. She’s going to be turning something in very soon. So we’re back to the original author and we’re gonna go back to the original characters.” (sic) She added: “It’s exciting too because I think the kids are probably a little bit older now, so that might add another element.”

This update comes after Kidman and Witherspoon, who star in and executive produce the series, separately confirmed that they were ‘working on’ a new season in January 2024. David E. Kelley, the creator of the series, left fans wondering which characters would be returning for the new season. He told ET In April 2024: “It’s a very, very busy schedule to make it work.” Witherspoon has now confirmed that the main characters will be back. Elsewhere, in her chat with E! News, she also shared an update on the upcoming Amazon Prime prequel of her iconic Legally Blonde character, Elle Woods. She said: “[Elle] is the prequel to Elle Woods, to Legally Blonde. And it’s gonna be the story of Elle in high school. We’re having this open casting so anybody can submit a tape.” Witherspoon is also working on a third Legally Blonde film in which she will reprise the leading role.
