Privacy Notice The Princess of Wales has access to some of the most famous pieces of jewellery in the world – whether it is historic royal tiaras or her engagement ring that once belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales. But, during her most recent appearance in a special video to congratulate Team GB athletes who competed in the 2024 Olympics, eagle-eyed royal fans spotted a more understated gem. As she stood alongside Prince William – who was sporting a dapper new beard – the Princess flashed a different wedding band which is thought to be a promise ring made up of both her and William’s birthstones.

Fans were quick to notice the ring. Onene wrote in the comments: “For those asking about her ring. I may be wrong but it looks to be the promise ring that William gave Catherine many (many, many) years ago. The Promise Ring is a rose gold ring designed with pearls (William’s birthstone in June) and multiple garnets (Kate’s January birthstone).” Referring to Kate’s iconic sapphire engagement ring which was missing from the video, another fan said: “That sapphire band sure looks far more practical for daily living, and it sure is pretty.” Another said: “Oh? Catherine was clearly wearing her wedding ring in the video, but not her engagement ring. Instead, she was wearing one that looks new or that we hadn’t seen before.” Sign up to OK’s royal newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for free

The Princess of Wales’ famous ring once belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales, and was passed down to Prince William. The stunning jewel is a 12 carat oval sapphire surrounded by 14 round diamonds set in 18 karat white gold. It is estimated to be worth around £390,000. William proposed to Kate with the ring during a personal trip to Kenya in 2010 and they married on April 29, 2011. The Princess has spoken a few times about the symbolism of the ring and how having such an intimate tie to William’s late mother makes her feel. During a 2023 visit to Wales, Kate told one well-wisher: “It’s the same ring and it was exactly the same size when I tried it on.” Kate continued with emotion: “I’m honoured to wear it, I never sadly got to meet her. And also now with the children and grandchildren, I think she would have loved being a grandmother so much. She’d be absolutely brilliant, we miss her every day.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
