Iconic 80s star met horrific end at just 40 – after incredible one-hit wonder success

The star was born as James Michael Aloysius Bradford in 1954, later changing his name to Jimmy Nail after a six-inch spike went through his foot when working in a glass factory. His big break came in 1983 with Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, after his partner encouraged him to audition even though he had no experience as an actor. The comedy-drama about UK construction workers coping abroad ran for two series, reaching 17 million viewers. It received the reboot treatment in 2001. A starring role in Spender followed, along with Crocodile Shoes, which Jimmy conceived. He also released an album to co-incide with the series, following his chart-topping success with the single Ain’t No Doubt in 1992, which had spent three weeks at No 1.
