Privacy NoticePrince William and Prince Harry’s uncle, who also worked for the late Queen, has died. The husband of William and Harry’s aunt Lady Jane Spencer, Lord Robert Fellowes, passed away earlier this week aged 82. Jane is the older sister of Princess Diana, and had been married to Lord Fellowes for over 40 years. The pair have three children, Laura, Alexander and Eleanor – who are William and Harry’s cousins. Lord Fellowes and Jane’s eldest daughter, Laura, is godmother to Princess Charlotte. Lord Fellowes’s father was Sir William “Billy” Fellowes, the land agent at Sandringham from 1936 to 1964, and a shooting companion of the Queen’s father, King George VI. The Queen visited Lord Fellowes when he was born in 1942, and later famously said of the encounter: “Robert is the only one of my private secretaries I have held in my arms”.

Lord Fellowes worked as private secretary to the late Queen for nine years. He was by her side during some of the most dramatic times during the 1990s, from the divorces of the Queen’s children, and Princess Diana’s death. Lord Fellowes was in the role when his sister-in-law Diana died following a car crash in Paris in 1997. It was said that Lord Fellowes’ role of being a palace courtier meant he sometimes had a strained relationship with his sister-in-law, but when she died suddenly, he confirmed: “I was deeply fond of her. She was a very good person. She found it difficult in life to find happiness, and I’m sad for people who have that situation.” Lord Fellowes was a part of a small group of senior courtiers who helped convince the Queen to return to London from Balmoral following Diana’s death at the age of 36.

During that difficult time, Lord Fellowes helped to create the first draft of the Queen’s historic speech when she addressed the crowds as “your Queen, and as a grandmother” to the British public on the eve of Diana’s funeral. The final version of this famous speech was written by Lord Fellowes, the Queen, and her private secretary, Sir Robin Janvrin. In July 1999, Lord Fellowes was created a life peer in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, giving him the title of Baron Fellowes of Shotesham in the County of Norfolk.

His position meant that he was depicted in the hit Netflix series, The Crown, where he was played by Andrew Havill and he remained an extra equerry to the late Queen until her death in 2022. Lord Fellowes died on Monday (29 July) at the age of 82 from undisclosed causes.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
