Privacy NoticePrince William once moved his father, King Charles, to tears with a heartfelt comment that made the last 50 years of his work feel completely worthwhile. The royal duo now share an extraordinary bond, and one particular moment stands out. Charles is aware that his eldest son is safeguarding the monarchy and will eventually succeed him. This close relationship was evident back in 2019 during the ITV documentary, Prince Charles: Inside the Duchy of Cornwall. The film gave viewers a glimpse into Charles’ life like never before, showcasing the royal estate he has developed over the past 50 years into a billion-pound business for his own support.

The documentary featured William conversing with second-generation farmer Mervyn Keeling about his private estate. Looking ahead, William said: “I’ve started to think about how I will inherit the Duchy one day and what I do with it. I think it’s really important, the family angle, I really do.” Following this, viewers were shown a clip of King Charles reflecting on the conversation between his son and the farmer, reports the Mirror. The King shared his emotional reaction, saying: “When I saw it, I couldn’t believe it. I was deeply touched and moved by what he said. Frankly, it reduced me to tears. It did, really. Because, I suddenly thought, well, just hearing that from him has made the last 50 years worthwhile.” Kate has reportedly played a key role in mending the relationship between father and son. The Princess of Wales has ensured Charles is included in their children’s birthdays and significant events.

Royal expert Camilla Tominey revealed to The Telegraph: “The warmth which so obviously zings between father and son seems to signify a laying to rest of the ghosts of William’s childhood and any soreness he has felt towards his father after witnessing the traumatic fallout of his parents’ separation as a 10-year-old boy.” The historic style of the Prince of Wales is traditionally bestowed upon the eldest son of the monarch. Whoever holds the title also gains the styles of Duke of Cornwall, Earl of Chester, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. He will also inherit the vast private estate of the Duchy of Cornwall. The title originated in approximately 1223 when Llywelyn ap Gruffudd was given the title by the English King Henry III. The prophecy linked to The Prince of Wales title stems from the belief that one day a prince will be presented from Eleanor’s Gate atop Caernarfon Castle and that he will be a true Welsh-speaking son of Wales.

It became a convention to name the British male heir as the Prince of Wales when King Henry III’s son, King Edward I, murdered Llywelyn ap Gruffudd and gave the title to his son, King Edward II. From that point, the title has been passed down through generations of male heirs to the throne. There have been twenty-seven Princes of Wales, including the likes of King Henry VIII, King Charles II and King Edward VIII. The title was recently granted to Prince William following the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II. William is following in his father’s footsteps as he was famously the longest-serving Prince of Wales in history.
