Despite his strained relationship with the extended Royal family in recent years, Harry was once a regular at the Royal Christmas festivities. The royals have a charming tradition of gifting each other small, inexpensive, joke presents during the festive season, reports the Mirror. However, one year, Harry was left puzzled by a gift from an unexpected Royal relative, which he even described as “cold-blooded”. In his memoir Spare, Harry recalled his interactions with his great-aunt, the late Queen’s sister Princess Margaret – or ‘Aunt Margo’ as he refers to her – admitting that he didn’t know her very well, despite sharing “12.5 per cent” of her DNA.

In his memoir, Prince Harry recounted a quirky Christmas Eve at Sandringham Estate when Princess Margaret gave him an odd gift of a tiny pen with a rubber fish wrapped around it. “Standing before my pile, I chose to open the smallest present first. The tag said: ‘From Aunt Margo’. I looked over, called out: ‘Thank you, Aunt Margo!’,” he wrote. After unwrapping it, Harry was taken aback and expressed his gratitude to Margaret, who emphasised that it wasn’t just any pen but a special one. Harry reflected on the gift, noting: “It wasn’t just any biro, she pointed out. It had a tiny rubber fish wrapped around it. I said: ‘Oh. A fish biro! OK.’ I told myself: That is cold-blooded.”

He also opened up in his book about how he felt he and Margaret should have been friends, considering they were both “Two Spares” with much in common. “Her relationship with Granny wasn’t an exact analogue of mine with Willy, but pretty close. The simmering rivalry, the intense competition (driven largely by the older sibling), it all looked familiar. Aunt Margo also wasn’t that dissimilar from Mummy. Both rebels, both labelled as sirens,” he wrote. To mark his 40th birthday, the Duke of Sussex opened up about his life as a father and revealed that his two children were the “best gift” he has been given. “The best gift I’ve ever been given is, without a doubt, my kids. I enjoy watching them grow every single day, and I love being their dad,” he told People ahead of the big day.
