The Princess of Wales has also been receiving cancer treatment, temporarily stepping back from her public roles. This has sparked speculation about whether Prince Harry might return to royal duties after his dramatic exit in 2020. Reportedly, Prince Harry is open to adopting a temporary royal role while his father undergoes treatment and has shared with close ones that he’s prepared to step in. This follows hints of a possible thaw in relations with his father during an interview with an American morning show.

Yet, it was only last year that Harry seemed to dismiss any ideas of resuming his royal position. In a revealing conversation with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America while promoting his book Spare in January, Harry was direct. Upon being quizzed if there’s a possibility of him and Meghan re-joining the fold as working royals, his response was clear-cut: “No. I don’t think it is ever going to be possible.” He went on to explain: “Even if there is an agreement, or an arrangement between me and my family, there is that third party that is going to do everything they can to make sure that isn’t possible. Reports suggest that Prince Harry won’t be granted a temporary royal role despite his return to the UK following King Charles’ cancer diagnosis. The agreement made when he and Meghan stepped down as working royals in 2020 is said to remain unchanged. A source told The Telegraph: “Those terms were quite clear, and the King’s illness hasn’t altered that.” Another insider maintained that the idea of a hybrid royal role for Harry was inappropriate and that stance “remains the case”. Amidst these developments, Prince William has reportedly confided in friends that there’s no possibility of Harry rejoining the inner circle. The Prince of Wales, deeply upset by Harry’s ongoing criticisms of the monarchy, is determined to prevent any attempts by his brother to re-enter ‘The Firm’.

According to sources close to William, with the news of their father’s health, William is prepared to shoulder additional responsibilities himself. One source stated: “Whatever has been discussed between William and the King is private, but it is absolutely and categorically clear that he (William) would not allow Harry to return. “He thought it was a bad idea at the time and he’s even more clear now. If anyone is going to take on more duties it will be William and that isn’t even on the agenda for now. His main focus is on his father’s health, his family and what is best for the monarchy. There is a zero per cent chance Harry is coming back in any capacity.”
