Diana’s biographer, Andrew Morton, has shared insights into her approach, revealing: “She took the young royals with her on her private charity visits from a young age… One of the reasons was she didn’t want the boys to grow up thinking the whole world was 4×4 Range Rovers, shotguns and nannies.” Not only did Diana aim to give her sons a taste of life outside palace walls, but she also had a cheeky streak when it came to traditions. She loved to stir up a bit of fun, much to the amusement of her friends and godchildren.

One such tradition has been lovingly continued by Prince George’s godmother, Julia Samuel, which surely brings a mix of delight and exasperation to The Prince and Princess of Wales! Julia Samuel, a cherished friend of Diana, Princess of Wales, has kept alive a playful birthday ritual for Prince George. As a psychotherapist who first met Diana in 1987, Samuel was chosen as one of Prince George’s godmothers at his christening in 2013, a role given by Prince William and Kate in tribute to her bond with Diana.

On the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast, Samuel opened up about her close relationship with the Wales family and how she honours Diana’s legacy through this enduring birthday tradition with her own children. The close friend then spoke about her godson, saying: “He is amazing. He’s funny and feisty and cheeky and God she [Diana] would have loved him so much. That is heartbreaking for all of them.” She also shared a sweet connection with Princess Diana, revealing: “So I do to George what she did to us which is give impossible toys which are really noisy, take a lot of making.”

She amusingly added about the gift-giving tradition: “I come in slightly tipped by the size of the present that William then has to spend days putting together.” And continued: “And then put all the machinery together and it makes awful tooting noises and lights flashing and all of that. That makes me laugh and it makes George laugh.” Julia holds a special place as one of seven godparents to Prince George, who was christened in the Chapel Royal of St James’s Palace on October 23, 2013, and boasts an impressive list of godfathers and godmothers including The Duke of Westminster and Zara Tindall.Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
