Privacy NoticeIt feels like only yesterday that The Prince and Princess of Wales appeared on the steps of the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, with their firstborn back in 2013. When it came to guessing what the little royal would be called ahead of the big reveal, bookies had the names George as short as 2/1 with Henry at 3/1 and James at 5/1. But after a few days, royal fans were put out of their misery as the future King’s name was revealed to be George Alexander Louis. While we cannot imagine Prince George with any other name nowadays, it would appear that his mother “had her heart set” on another name – and you won’t believe what is was.

Prince Louis named after Royal Family’s secret weapon – with sweet Charles link

His name has many strong royal ties. George has been the name of six kings, including the late Queen’s father, King George VI. His first middle name is Alexander, which is the male version of the late monarch’s middle name, Alexandra. And Louis is a name used by the royals to honour Lord Louis Mountbatten, Prince Philip’s uncle who was murdered by the IRA in 1979. The name is also carried by King Charles, Prince William and his younger brother Prince Louis. It seems impossible to believe that there was a chance the young royal could have had another name but it seems he wasn’t originally going to be a George – but rather an Alexander.

According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, the Princess of Wales had her “heart set on” the name Alexander, though the couple had not decided for sure. Nicholl said: “Courtiers insisted the pair had not found out the sex of their unborn baby, and friends close to the couple claim William wanted a surprise. “Although Kate apparently suspected it was a boy and had set her heart on the name Alexander, they had not yet decided what to call their firstborn.” Nicholl added that during her pregnancy, the Princess referred to George as ‘our little grape’ and that she had a hunch she was carrying a boy because he kicked so much. Of course his mother’s preferred name choice is still firmly in the line up as his first middle name.

Prince George’s name was reportedly chosen by the family’s beloved dog, Lupo

There were also reports that Prince William and Kate’s beloved late dog Lupo helped to choose Prince George’s name. According to The Times, they reportedly wrote all the possible names on scraps of paper and put them on the floor of their home. They then let Lupo in to see which piece of paper he went over to – and it is thought he picked George. Unfortunately Lupo died in November 2020 and Prince William and Catherine shared the sad news on their Instagram account. They said: “Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away. He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much. – W & C”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
