Privacy NoticePiglets and Broadchurch star Sarah Parish opened up about the heart-wrenching loss of her daughter, which nearly led to the collapse of her marriage with husband James Murray. Their daughter Ella Jayne, who was born with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome a condition that can cause developmental issues and heart and kidney defects tragically passed away at just eight months old. Speaking to the Daily Mail back in 2019, Sarah shared: “Such an incredible loss inevitably puts an enormous strain on a relationship because people grieve in different ways.” She reflected on the challenges they faced, saying, “It would take the most emotionally mature people to be able to cope in that situation, and to comfort one another in the correct way.” Admitting the struggle, she added, “I can only say now, eight years later, that I’m not sure we were able to do that at the time.”

The turning point for Sarah and James came when they set up the Murray Parish Trust in memory of their daughter, which Sarah believes was pivotal in helping them through their grief. The charity work became a positive outlet for them, strengthening their bond. The couple has since been blessed with a second daughter, Nell. Sarah is now starring in ITV’s comedy Piglets about a fictional police training college, which follows a group of six very different would-be cops and the handful of key staff whose thankless task it is to knock them into some kind of shape.

Sarah Parish plays no-nonsense Superintendent Julie Spry, who alongside Superintendent Bob Weekes (played by Mark Heap) must oversee the training of the next batch of new recruits. The show faced some controversy when its title was criticised by The Police Federation of England and Wales, who branded it as “disgusting” because the word ‘pig’ has long been used as a derogatory slang word for police officers. ITV responded saying that: “Piglets is a fictional new comedy about a police training academy and the title is not intended to cause any offence.” Sarah also played Cath Atwood, the best friend of assault victim Trish and wife of local mechanic Jim in ITV’s Broadchurch. This role reunited her with David Tennant, a frequent co-star from projects like the 2004 musical Blackpool, TV drama Recovery and the Doctor Who Christmas special. Sarah’s impressive career includes roles in The Bill, Doctor Who, Trollied, and films such as The Wedding Date, The Holiday as Hannah and Cutting It.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
