Privacy NoticeNetflix fans were treated to some good news today – swiftly followed by some bad news that left some viewers seriously unhappy. The US streaming giant revealed that the second series of Squid Game – a follow-up to the smash hit drama that captivated its fans back in 2021 – would be hitting screens later this year. However, it also let slip that a “final season” would be coming next year, meaning the broadcaster is slamming the door on its most popular ever show after its 2025 outing. One fan objected: “‘Final season what y’all mean. This show is too damn good for it to end on season 3.” Another agreed: “‘Anyone else find it weird that this is their most watched show ever and they’re only making three seasons out of it?”

Squid Game, which was created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, features a group of hard-up contestants who are trapped in a sinister game that pits them against one another as they fight to the death for a huge sum of money. It ranks as the most-watched TV series in Netflix history – beating Stranger Things and Wednesday – and shot to No1 in 94 countries, including the UK, when it was released. A minute-long trailer for the second series was released today, initially showing athletes competing on an Olympics-style running track, before they are replaced by competitors in the show’s famous green tracksuits, who are shown falling to the floor as they are picked off. The official description of the new series explains: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. “Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organisation proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.” Sign up to OK’s TV newsletter to get updates sent to your inbox for freeStory SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
