Privacy NoticeEmotions have been running high once more on ITV’s The Voice, as a female singer from Manchester named Kyra thrilled the audience in the first blind audition episode of the new series. She movingly sang The Beatles song Golden Slumbers, and impressed the judges who could not see that she was sitting in a wheelchair as she performed. When the judges spun around to see who the voice belonged to, Kyra, 20, accidentally dropped her mic and Will.i.am rushed onto the stage to return it to her, causing the singer to be moved to tears. In her video shown before she sang, Kyra explained she had been diagnosed with PoTS syndrome two years ago, a condition that has left her in a wheelchair. “A couple of years ago, my life kind of flipped on its head,” she said. “All of a sudden my health rapidly declined and I was bed-bound for months, and then I was diagnosed with a chronic illness called PoTS syndrome. I’d like to show people, that even if you’ve got limitations, it doesn’t have to stop you from doing things like this. I’m definitely excited for the challenge but it is terrifying.”

The NHS says Postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) is when your heart rate increases very quickly after getting up from sitting or lying down. Kyra has made it through to the next stage of the show and chose Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher to be her mentors. Fans were thrilled that she made it through to the next round, with one writing: “Inspirational and so glad someone turned, as she has a voice that just needs to be heard.” Another viewer said: Must confess I cried. So much talent and so much respect!”

There were also comments from other people who have PoTS, including one who commented: “Amazing! So happy she’s going through her voice is awesome – as someone whose gravity allergy is slightly better managed finally after 4 years now is keeping everything crossed for her,” and a second who said: “Having #pots is horrendous, as a fellow sufferer, Kyra’s description of being allergic to gravity is spot on. I’ll be watching and supporting from my bed… hope she goes far.” A third added: “Kyra. omg yes wow. She is my new role model. She has shown on this show having a disability or a condition shouldn’t stop your dreams.” While Kyra’s performance was one of the most emotional of the evening, there were fun moments too, most notably when new judges Tom and Danny – who are judging and mentoring as a pair – got up from their special double seat and switched with Sir Tom and Will.i.am. As well as discovering the boys’ secret stash of sweets, Will.i.am and Sir Tom also showed that the double seat rocked wildly if either one of them moved, causing LeAnn, Tom and Danny to burst out laughing.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
