Miranda, 51, opened up about how Selena’s brave health journey gave her the courage to reveal her own diagnosis of Lyme disease, which she shared this week. The emotional moment took place when both stars appeared on The Graham Norton Show, which is set to air on TV on Friday, October 11. On the show, Miranda explained that Selena’s 2022 documentary film, My Mind & Me, actually helped her find the strength to be vulnerable and write about her illness in her upcoming memoir, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You. Selena, 32, has long been open about her struggles with mental health and lupus, an autoimmune condition. Her documentary showed the emotional toll of battling psychosis, leading to her diagnosis of bipolar disorder. The singer was visibly moved by Miranda’s words, with the comedian crediting the pop star’s honesty for inspiring her to speak out. Miranda herself was diagnosed with Lyme disease after reportedly suffering the symptoms of the illness for a staggering three decades.

On the show, Miranda said: “I watched Selina’s documentary and it gave me the courage to be vulnerable and share my feelings about my disease. It kept me writing.” She added, of her new memoir: “The book is not just about illness; it is about how I learnt to live well and free with joy and meaning despite my circumstances. I now feel I can be in the world as me. I feel fully free, if not fully recovered.”

The comedian and actress revealed this week that the illness rendered her so ill that she couldn’t get out of bed, or leave the house. Miranda also explained on the BBC chat show that though her illness left her feeling alone, meeting her new husband helped combat that, sharing: “I had my diagnosis during the pandemic, and it was a very lonely time, so I decided I didn’t want to be alone anymore, so I put out this little prayer with about one percent of hope, but I met someone and got married in July.”
