Privacy NoticeMidsomer Murders fans were over the moon as the show made a smashing comeback in July 2024, bringing more intriguing mysteries for DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) to solve on ITV. However, there was fear sparked among fans earlier this year that the popular series could be axed. Since taking over from John Nettles in 2011, Neil Dudgeon has become synonymous with the sharp-witted lead detective of Midsomer Murders. His notable past roles include appearances in Son of Rambow (2007), and Messiah: The Harrowing (2005). Off screen, Neil enjoys family life in West London with his wife Mary Peate, a talented BBC radio producer known for her work on Agatha Christie adaptations, and their two children, Greta and Joe. Their love story is quite unique, having blossomed not through friends or modern dating methods, but through their professional collaboration.

Neil reminisced to the Mirror in 2019 about how they met: “We were doing a play, she was directing, I was in it. One thing led to another as it does, and 20-odd years later we’re still here.” Reflecting on tying the knot with Mary, the celebrated actor shared: “We got married about 12 years ago. We’re both very emotional and were in bits at our wedding. We both said our vows through a veil of tears,” reports the Mirror.

While Mary has made her mark in media, she usually steps back to let her hubby bask in the limelight solo. However, the duo did make an adorable joint appearance on an episode of All Star Mr and Mrs back in 2012. When prompted to liken her thespian spouse to famous sleuths like Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, or Lieutenant Columbo, Mary lovingly quipped: “None of them are very lovely are they, not nearly lovely enough for you darling.” Speaking of their children, Neil mentioned that the kids are “much more arty” than he ever was in his youth. He expressed: “I think they’re exposed to more stuff now, there’s so much around to do with music, art and performing. I was useless,” adding with a chuckle, “I got booted out of the choir, I was told I couldn’t sing, they told me to stand there and mime! I played the violin and broke the string and I couldn’t really draw.”Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
