Privacy Notice Michelle Keegan has opened up about how she looks up to Coronation Street legend Helen Worth in a candid chat where she reminisced about the piece of advice her former co-star once gave her when she was panicking. Former soap star Michelle revealed that Helen, who has played Gail Platt for 50 years, supported her and shared some vital advice with her during her early days on Coronation Street, especially the first time Michelle’s character had to cry. During an interview on stage in Manchester last week, Michelle, 37, recalled how Helen’s words of wisdom on the soap set years ago stopped her panicking about an intense upcoming scene and “took a weight off her shoulders”.

According to The Mirror, Michelle insisted Helen is a “legend” as she shared a story about her early days as an actress playing barmaid Tina McIntyre and the piece of advice Helen shared with her. Michelle played Tina on the cobbles from 2008 and she was the barmaid of the instantly recognisable Rovers Return and had notable relationships with Jack P. Shepherd’s David Platt, Chris Fountain’s Tommy Duckworth and Chris Gascoyne’s Peter Barlow. Her stint on the soap ended when she was killed off in a grisly storyline in 2014 that saw her violently murdered by Carla Connor’s brother, Rob Donovan, played by Marc Baylis. But it was one of Michelle’s earlier scenes playing Tina that made her experience anxiety. Luckily, Helen was on hand to offer some friendly advice.

According to the publication, Michelle said: ” [The advice came] before my first ever emotional storyline on the soap. It was quite a heavy, heavy, heavy storyline, and the script said that I had to cry. I was new to acting, especially TV acting – Corrie was my first ever job – and I remember getting the script, and halfway through the script, it said Tina began to cry. “I remember my anxiety in that moment – I built it up so much. I was like ‘I can’t do this. I can’t cry. I’m a crap actor. I shouldn’t be doing this job’ It built up so much in my head before Helen pulled me aside. “She went ‘Listen, you don’t have to cry, so if you don’t feel it in that moment, you don’t have to cry. You don’t have to prove anything. You do what you think your character would do in that moment. If your character doesn’t want to cry, you don’t have to cry’. That weight off my shoulders just went.”

It comes following the news that legend Helen, famed for playing Gail Platt, has quit her role on the ITV soap and will be exiting at the end of the year

Michelle went on to admit that she did cry for the scene but that Helen’s advice was something she’s “taken with me all these years.” She added: “I’ve got nothing to prove. It’s fine. I don’t have to. And I’ve taken that with me all these years. Now, just be truthful to how I’m feeling in that moment in that scene. Just be truthful.” Since her days on Coronation Street, Michelle has gone on to take on a number of huge roles, from her portrayal of Georgie Lane in Our Girl, to Erin Croft in Brassic and most recently, Maya Stern, in the Netflix adaptation of Harlan Coben’s novel, Fool Me Once, which became a huge global hit. She is married to Heart presenter and former TOWIE star Mark Wright, with whom she recently launched a sportswear brand Aytee7 – and the couple moved into their dream mansion in Essex last year after years of building work.

Michelle’s sweet memory comes following the news that legend Helen, famed for playing Gail Platt, has quit her role on the ITV soap. The actress has played Gail for 50 years but will be exiting towards the end of 2024. Helen announced in June she had made the decision to leave Coronation Street. The actress said it was now the “perfect time” to leave the cobbles, as she celebrated 50 years as Gail. “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world. I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding”, Helen said.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
