Privacy Notice Meghan Markle shared a heartfelt seven-word comment with a close friend as she bid farewell before her and Harry’s departure from the UK after stepping down from the Royal Family. The Duchess of Sussex held a private meeting with Association of Commonwealth Universities scholars in what was her last official engagement, where she also delivered an emotional speech to staff before heading off to Canada. Journalist Omid Scobie was among several reporters invited to Meghan’s final event, where the duchess embraced her aides and was reportedly tearful during her last hours in the UK. This followed the Sussexes’ shocking decision to step down as senior members of the Royal Family in January 2020.

In his book Finding Freedom, co-authored with Carolyn Durand, Omid wrote about how Meghan used that meeting to say her final goodbyes to her team at Buckingham Palace. He revealed that Meghan hugged him and made a tearful confession, reports the Mirror. Omid penned: “Staff who had been with the couple from day one were mourning the end of what was supposed to be a happy story: two people fall in love, get married, have a baby, serve the Queen, the end. Instead, they were leaving the country. “As Meghan gave me a final hug goodbye, she said, ‘It didn’t have to be this way.'” The Duchess reportedly felt heartbroken that things hadn’t turned out differently as she and Harry were on the brink of their new chapter in Canada, eventually settling in the USA. In an article for Harper’s Bazaar, Omid also revealed: “Tears that the Duchess had been bravely holding back [were] free to flow among familiar faces.” He added: “The Duchess of Sussex emotionally [bid] much-loved aides farewell, with her flight ‘home’ to Canada leaving in a matter of hours. Meghan would fly back to Canada on the last commercial flight of the day, eager to be back in Vancouver Island by the morning before Archie wakes up.” It’s also been claimed that Meghan “tearfully” confided to a friend, “I gave up my entire life for this family” when faced with criticism over the decision she and Harry made to step down from Royal duties. She is believed to have expressed that she “was willing to do whatever it takes”.

When Prince Harry and Meghan broke the news of their royal departure, they said: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.” The pair stepped out for their final royal duty on Monday, March 9, 2020, attending the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey alongside the Queen and other high-ranking royals.Story SavedYou can find this story in  My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
