Privacy NoticeMeghan Markle reportedly had an emotional reaction when she was largely blamed for Prince Harry stepping down as a senior working royal in 2020. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their intention to step down as senior working royals in January 2020, with their final royal engagement taking place just two months later. They then relocated to the US with their young son, Archie, shortly after. Despite the decision being a joint one, with the couple stating they wanted to “work to become financially independent”, Meghan has often been singled out as the reason behind Harry’s departure from his senior royal role.

In the 2020 book ‘Finding Freedom’, which Harry and Meghan are said to have had no involvement in, author Omid Scobie claimed that Meghan expressed her feelings about being blamed during a conversation with a friend. According to the Irish Times, Omid Scobie wrote: “The courtiers blame Meghan, and some family do. She, on the other hand, felt she had sacrificed a lot for the royals,” reports the Express. “As Meghan tearfully told a friend in March: ‘I gave up my entire life for this family. I was willing to do whatever it takes. But here we are. It’s very sad.'” Speaking about Meghan’s departure from the Royal Family, one royal author described it as a “loss for the monarchy”. Royal author Jane Marguerite Tippett told 9Honey: “It was probably a very complicated situation, the one that Meghan found herself in.” The author suggested that Meghan’s independence and past life could be to blame for the Megxit shake-up. Jane explained: “The institution didn’t understand how to deal with a woman, not so much who was divorced, but who had had a very independent life, who had had an education, who had lived the first 35 years of her life as someone who called her own shots, called her own story, and they probably didn’t come to grips with that in perhaps the most pragmatic way.” The commentator went on to describe their departure as a significant loss for the royals, noting: “It’s a loss for the monarchy to not have them because they worked on interesting charities, interesting projects.”

Meghan and Harry have set up their new life in sunny California, where they’re raising their young family, including five year old Archie and three year old Lilibet. Since making their dramatic move stateside following the infamous Megxit, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed little Lili into the world in June after their royal departure.
