Choosing a glamorous red gown, featuring a daring neckline and leg-revealing split, 43-year-old Meghan definitely made a statement during what was one of her first red carpet appearances since stepping back from Royal duties, and it marked a significant departure from her more reserved Royal wardrobe. Meghan’s choice of attire may also have been a not-so-subtle nod to her Royal in-laws – she accessorised the dress, which she wore again last week at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Gala, with a bracelet which once belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Later, in her and Harry’s Netflix documentary released in December 2022, Meghan spoke out about her decision to stick to neutrals such as ‘camel, beige, white’ during her time with the royals, explaining it was all about fitting in.

She noted, “There was thought in that. To my understanding, you can’t ever wear the same colour as Her Majesty if there’s a group event,” and added, “But then you also should never be wearing the same colour as one of the other more senior members of the family.” The Duchess of Sussex went on to say, “So I was like…well, what’s a colour they’ll probably never wear? Camel? Beige? White? So I wore a lot of muted tones but it was also so I could just blend in. I’m not trying to stand out here. There’s no version of me joining this family and trying not to do everything I could to fit in'”. She later shared: “Until that last week in the UK, I rarely wore colour and I never wanted to upstage or ruffle any feathers, so I just tried to blend in. But I wore a lot of colour that week. I felt, ‘Well, let’s just look like a rainbow.'”

It was speculated that they were sending a subtle message with their matching fashion choices, with Kate leading the way in a festive deep burgundy coat, complete with a matching clutch bag and shoes, reports the Mirror. William and Harry’s cousin Zara Tindall notably wore a coat in the same shade, as did Kate’s daughter Princess Charlotte. The Princess’s sister, Pippa Matthews, also joined in on the theme, sporting a coat in the same deep red.

As for the men, Prince William chose a burgundy tie, as did Zara’s husband Mike Tindall. The late Queen, meanwhile, was known for always wearing bright colours to ensure she could always be spotted. Speaking in ITV’s The Queen at 90, Sophie Wessex confirmed Her Majesty’s logic, saying: “She needs to stand out for people to be able to say, ‘I saw the queen’.
