Privacy NoticeFollowing the news that a birthday fundraiser had been set up for Meghan Markle’s dad, a royal expert has dubbed it a “ridiculous idea”. The creator of the GoFundMe’s page, Lady Colin Campbell, claimed that Thomas Markle needed to know that there are still “good people” in the world. Describing him as “rejected and abandoned”, the former I’m A Celebrity star said he deserved to celebrate his 80th birthday (which took place on July 18) – and the page raised over £54,000. This comes after Thomas told the Daily Mail that he’d hoped reconnect with his daughter Meghan – who he’s been distant from since her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018 – and finally meet his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. However, according to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, the fund for Thomas – who was embroiled in scandal when it emerged that he had taken part in a staged paparazzi photoshoot ahead of Meghan’s wedding – is “ridiculous”. Speaking exclusively to OK!, Jennie said: “I think it’s rather a ridiculous idea to set up a fund for Thomas Markle. I’m sorry that his daughter doesn’t want him in her life and I think it’s quite cruel of Meghan. However, he has another daughter and a son who surely can perfectly well look after their father.

The royal expert continued: “There are an awful of people in the world who need money far more than Mr. Markle. So I think it’s really a mischief-making exercise to make Meghan look bad. “Meghan appears to have comprehensively broken all links with her American family, apart from her mother and maybe a cousin. I think it’s a great shame and it’s incredibly sad for Thomas not to know his son-in-law or his grandchildren. But families are complicated and feelings run deep. Both Samantha and Thomas Junior have said some outrageous things about Meghan, and Samantha is still looking for her day in court. It’s all incredibly sad.” In the same interview, Thomas also shared that he thinks both he and King Charles have been treated “so badly” by Prince Harry and Meghan over the years.

The Duchess of Sussex’s father, who didn’t walk her down the aisle, said the last decade of his life has been “overshadowed” by the drama. He said: “Neither of us deserves the treatment we’ve received. Why have they treated not only me but the Royal Family and the King so badly? Archie and Lilibet have two grandpas who want to see them, one of whom is the King of England.” It’s reported that King Charles has also rarely seen the children, as Harry and Meghan left the Royal family and moved to California in 2020. Despite their estrangement with both families, Harry has insisted that Meghan is “so similar” to his late mother Princess Diana. Speaking in their Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, Harry said that how Meghan is as a person reminds him of his beloved mum. He told the camera: “So much of what Meghan is and how she is is so similar to my mum. She has the same compassion, same empathy and the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.” However, following her dad’s birthday and choosing to “freeze him out”, Jennie believes the idea of Meghan setting up a a fund for Thomas is “rather rich”. Jennie continued: “I would say, however, that it always seems rather rich for Meghan to be talking about compassion and love and healing whilst continuing to freeze out her elderly father.”Story SavedYou can find this story in My Bookmarks.Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.Follow OK!
