Privacy NoticePrince Harry and Meghan Markle’s chief of staff, Josh Kettler, dramatically quit earlier this week, after just three months in the role. Now, a leading royal expert has waded in on the unexpected turn of events, saying the Duchess of Sussex finds it hard to give up ‘control’, which could be a contributing factor in Josh’s exit. The public relations maestro began working with Harry just before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s three-day tour to Nigeria in May. But, just months later, Josh has stepped away from the position, which was meant to help “guide him [Harry] through his next phase”. Insiders said that his exit was a ‘mutual’ decision, having been on a trial period, with a consensus that it wasn’t quite the perfect match. Josh stepping down from his role comes just before the Sussex’s prepare for a ‘royal-style’ tour of Colombia, which will mark their second official trip of the year following Nigeria.

Speaking exclusively to OK! about the chief of staff’s exit, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said: “The timing of this resignation is definitely very awkward, with the Colombia visit about to kick off. “Presumably, Harry and Meghan have someone who can step into Josh Kettler’s shoes pretty quickly, even on a temporary basis. If it really was by ‘mutual agreement’ then you might imagine they could have agreed on a more convenient time for Kettler to leave.” Jennie continued: “It’s hard not to draw the conclusion that Harry and Meghan are hard taskmasters, and I suspect they, or at least Meghan, find it difficult to cede control, delegate responsibility and allow their staff to get on with things. It certainly doesn’t help to dispel the impression that they are not an easy couple to work for.”

Jennie had previously branded Meghan an ‘absolute control freak’, during an interview with Talk TV. “Meghan is an absolute control freak, and therein lies the problem, actually. She wants to be in control of every aspect of her life – she’s an independent, wonderful, outspoken feminist woman who was welcomed into the Royal Family… but she’s not a team player, she’s not used to having to cede control in any way whatsoever.” Nine members of staff are said to have left their positions with Harry and Meghan since their big move to California in January 2020. It comes as the couple have been focusing on building their own brand away from the Royal Family, including Meghan’s new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard and their media company, Archewell Productions. For their upcoming Colombia trip, it was confirmed that Harry and Meghan would visit the country’s capital, Bogota, and coastal regions, after receiving an official invite from the country’s vice president and minister for equality and equity, Francia Márquez.
